Methods For Proof Of US Citizenship


There are several methods that you can use in order to show proof of US citizenship. There will be times that it is necessary to show proof of US citizenship and the appropriate documents are necessary to do this. It is important to know which documents will serve as proof for the times that you need them such as obtaining a passport and re-entry into the United States.

One of the most common forms of documentation to show proof of US citizenship is with a birth certificate. If you were born in the United States, there will be a record of the birth. Many people go to the hospital of birth to obtain a copy of their birth certificate. A hospital copy of the birth certificate will not serve as a legal documentation to show proof of US citizenship. You must obtain a court house copy of the birth certificate that has the court house notary seal. You can obtain a court house copy of your birth certificate by writing to the county court house of the county in which you were born. The majority of these will require that you come to the court house in person and pick up the copy of the documentation. Although, some will let you fill out the information on the Internet, pay the fees and then mail a certified copy to you through regular mail. A downloaded copy or scanned copy of the birth certificate will not serve to show legal proof of US citizenship.

If you were born outside of the United States, you will not have a certificate of birth from the US. However, even if you were born outside of the United States and both of your parents are legal US citizens then you are automatically a United States citizen. You can obtain proof of US citizenship by producing a certificate of citizenship which you should be able to obtain from the consulate office. You can also obtain a certificate of consular registration of birth from the US consular's office. Either of these will show proof of US citizenship for you to obtain passports and re-entry into the United States.

Most often people need to show proof of US citizenship in order to obtain US passports. The most common form of proof of US citizenship for US passports is the certified birth certificate showing that you were born in the United States to legal US citizen parents. However, if you do not have one of these you can also produce proof your both of your parents' US citizenship, proof that both of your parents followed all of the US residency rules and regulations and proof that you have followed all of the US residency rules and regulations as well. You can also show proof that you were unaware of your right to claim US citizenship by having affidavits from employers, co-workers and relatives to show proof that you followed residency requirements but did not realize that you had claim as a US citizen. You can use the appropriate N-600 form to file claim and receive your certificate of citizenship from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services department.
