There are several US citizenship requirements and regulations that you need to go through in order to obtain US citizenship. The process for US citizenship is a lengthy one to ensure that people are serious about their commitment to the United States. You cannot just decide one day to become a US citizen and then an hour be sworn in as new US citizen. There are forms and applications that must be filled out and you even have to pass a US citizenship test.

The first step in becoming a US citizen is to actually live in the United States. For one, this gives you an idea about the country and how it is operated. Why would someone want to become a citizen of a country that they never lived in or even visited? In order to meet the US citizenship requirements you must live in the United States as a permanent resident for a minimum of five years. During that five you years you cannot go abroad for more than six months at a time. Additionally, you cannot be out of the United States for more than two-and-half years of the five year period. Other methods to receive US citizenship include: being married and living with your spouse a minimum of three years; serving in the US armed forces a minimum of three years; participating in the active armed services during a major war; having a spouse that died during active military service; gave service to a US armed vessel while retaining permanent residency status a minimum of five years; are employee or contract for the US government or serve a priestly function for a major religious denomination and lived in the US a minimum of five years. You can also claim US citizenship through birth, adoption and reclaiming lost citizenship.

The US citizenship requirements mandate that you take an English test that shows that you can read, write and speak English. You do not have to be extremely affluent in English to pass this test but it does help to have a strong English vocabulary. You will also take an exam that covers the basic information about the US government and history. There is multiple choice questions on the US citizenship exam that you will need to pass and answer. Traditionally, you need to be at least eighteen years of age in order to take the US citizenship exam. Once you pass the exam you will swear an oath of allegiance to the United States Constitution and agree to serve in the military if you are a male.

Additionally, the US citizenship requirements are that you demonstrate a strong and solid moral character. There is a long list of crimes that will automatically forfeit your right to obtain US citizenship. These include activities to pornography, gambling, habitual drunkenness offenses, and prostitution. There are additional crimes that are felonies and even minimum sentences in jails that will disqualify you as well from obtaining US citizenship. The best advice is to not serve any time in a correctional institution or jail and to not commit crimes in order to demonstrate a strong moral character. You risk immediate deportation and even deportation after you have served your sentence. Once you have taken the exam, shown good moral character you will renounce allegiance to any other country and pledge allegiance strictly and solely to the US. After meeting all of these US citizenship requirements you can become a permanent and legal US citizen.
